Adi ale Van is a Romanian artisan perfume house, launched in 2021 by the artist whose name it bears. Every bottle, cap, decoration and box is painted and assembled by hand in Romania, in small batches, and made to order. The fragrances, all extraits, tell of the country's rural and family memory, and are composed by the artist himself or by guest perfumers.
A Romanian artist and his memories
Adi ale Van is a visual artist first. On his website he describes himself as a small artist and a big dreamer, trying to give shape to his visions. His story begins in a village on the Danube plain, Grojdibodu, where he spent his childhood. The house is now based in Râmnicu Vâlcea, south of the Carpathians.
He names his sources of inspiration plainly. There are the places of his childhood, the Orthodox faith and its churches, the Holy Land and Jerusalem, antiques, old Romanian folk songs. Above all there is a family story: the anti-communist partisans of the Muscel mountains, whom his grandfather told him about during the winters. Several fragrances carry these memories in their names, from Decembrie 89, dated to the December 1989 revolution, to Leaves in the wind, subtitled Elixir de Muscel.
The house also states a commitment that goes beyond perfume: it says it supports research into, and the preservation and spread of, old Romanian musical traditions and forgotten rural crafts. Every bottle bears the words "Hand made in Romania", which the artist presents as a way of making his country known.
The bottle as a one-off piece
The work on the object is what sets Adi ale Van apart most from other artisan houses. The bottle, the cap, the decoration and the box are painted and shaped by hand by the artist. He works with natural or reclaimed materials: metal, leather, reclaimed wood, twine, ceramic, clay, bone, stone, cement, natural paints. Some caps are carved from tree fungi, left to dry for more than six months before being worked.
The direct result: no bottle looks exactly like the photo. Colors, patterns and the finish of the cap vary from one piece to the next, and the small irregularities are part of the object. The house makes to order. Expect a production lead time before shipping, longer than for a fragrance held in stock.
Several perfumers, one artistic direction
Adi ale Van does not compose everything himself. He holds the vision, the story and the making, and often entrusts the formula to a perfumer. The house has worked with Jimmy Bodin, Giovanni Festa, Anne-Sophie Behaghel, Antonio Alessandria, Camille Chemardin, Michele Marin, Flavius Călaj and David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi. Some recent fragrances are by the artist himself, such as Cozonac, Adiere and Gun Shadows.
The name that comes up most is Jimmy Bodin, a self-taught French perfumer, founder of The Unleashed Apothecary and co-founder of Jousset Parfums. He composed six of the thirteen fragrances offered at Passion Parfum, including Decembrie 89, the best known in the house. His taste for carefully built gourmands shows in Miez and Oven Veil.
The olfactory style: concentrated extraits and long macerations
All the fragrances are extraits. Across the house, concentration ranges from 22 to 40%, and the juices macerate for 4 to 30 months before bottling, followed by an additional maturation period. Among the thirteen fragrances in the shop, it runs from 25% for Labels of Feelings to 40% for Cozonac, Miez, Oven Veil and Gun Shadows, with 6 to 13 months of maceration according to the product pages.
Each fragrance carries an English subtitle, almost always "Potion" or "Elixir": Freedom Elixir, Winter Potion, Gourmand Potion. The names themselves are often Romanian and refer to a gesture, a dish or a landscape. Hai hui means wandering aimlessly. Coliva and cozonac are two ritual pastries. Plai is the gentle slope of a mountain, miez the soft crumb of bread.
The catalog leans clearly toward gourmands, often tied to holiday cooking and Orthodox rites. Bright fruity scents are rarer. At the other end, the house makes smoky, leathery compositions where it allows itself its most conceptual notes, such as an old newspaper accord or a wanted poster accord. Animalic bases, incense and leather are frequent. These fragrances are not meant to be discreet, and several take some getting used to.
Adi ale Van fragrances at Passion Parfum
Passion Parfum offers thirteen fragrances from the house in 50 ml, all made to order. The notes listed are those on the product pages.
Gourmands of memory
Decembrie 89 (Freedom Elixir, Jimmy Bodin, 32%) starts from a childhood memory of the 1989 revolution: apple, orange and lemon, then vanilla pod and hazelnut, over three vanillas and rum. It is the easiest fragrance in the house to love, and a good first approach.
Cozonac (Winter Potion, Adi ale Van, 40%) recreates the braided sweet bread of Romanian holidays. Candied lemon, pear, panettone and toasted hazelnuts, then panna cotta, orange blossom and rum, over Madagascar vanilla and candied fruit. A December fragrance above all.
Coliva (Gourmand Potion, Giovanni Festa, 35%) takes its name from the wheat cake shared at Orthodox memorial services. Licorice, absinthe, frankincense, coffee and cocoa, then baked bread, iris and cypriol, over labdanum, butter, amber and vanilla. Bread and church incense in the same bottle: it is the most unusual gourmand of the lot.
Miez (Sweet Potion, Jimmy Bodin, 40%) comes down to seven materials: cinnamon and gingerbread, oat flakes and hazelnuts, chocolate, Madagascar vanilla and sugar. A short, legible formula for those who like simple gourmands.
Oven Veil (Baked Potion, Jimmy Bodin, 40%) evokes the hot air coming out of the oven. Chocolate, a brownie accord, hazelnut and cherry, then orange, pumpkin, clove and almond, over vanilla and cocoa beans. The pumpkin and clove make it an autumn gourmand broader than a dessert.
Bright fruity scents
Hai Hui (Flower Power Extrait, Anne-Sophie Behaghel, 27%) opens on pineapple, black pepper, peppermint and cardamom, moves through elemi, almond and fig, and settles on vetiver and papyrus. A fruity woody scent for summer.
Dulce plai (Fruity Potion, Jimmy Bodin, 30%) stays fruity from start to finish: mandarin, blackberry and yuzu, guava, pomelo and peach, then dulce de leche and sugar. The sunniest fragrance in the catalog.
Melancolie (Yesterday Potion, Jimmy Bodin, 27%) describes the morning after a party. Passion fruit, ginger, lime and a champagne accord, then white grape, violet and liqueur, over ambrette, iris and mahogany. Sparkling at first, powdery at the end.
Smoke, leather and stories
Leaves in the wind (Elixir de Muscel, Michele Marin, 30%) is composed with 60% natural materials. Black pepper, tobacco, cinnamon and lavender, then birch, smoke, frankincense and leather, on a base of oud, civet, castoreum, labdanum and dust. Dense and animalic, for lovers of smoky birch.
Labels of Feelings (Elixir of Silence, Antonio Alessandria, 25%) sets white flowers, lily of the valley, magnolia and jasmine, between a fruity opening cut with juniper tar and a base of cedar, frankincense, leather and smoke. The most carefully built fragrance in the catalog, and the easiest to wear among the dark ones.
Adiere (Rebel Potion, Adi ale Van, 27%) opens on a Cuba Libre and cola accord, lime, bitter orange and thyme, then tobacco, whisky, leather and ink, over smoke, vanilla, tonka bean, cocoa and oud. A tobacco woody scent for the evening.
Mezcal My Love (Desire Potion, Jimmy Bodin, 32%) starts from grapefruit, peppermint and ginger, moves through a mezcal accord, agave syrup, geranium and rosemary, and ends on oakmoss, Haitian vetiver and hinoki. A smoky aromatic to wear in summer.
Gun Shadows (Iron Potion, Adi ale Van, 40%) is the most conceptual. Metallic notes and a blood accord, then aged liquor, cheap cigarettes and a wanted poster, over coffin wood, oud, old newspaper and ink. The house describes it as autobiographical. A difficult fragrance, and openly so.
Where to start with Adi ale Van
For a first encounter, Decembrie 89 remains the safest choice: gourmand, vanilla-rich, with no divisive note. For summer, Hai Hui or Dulce plai show another side of the house. Those who come for the dark compositions can start with Labels of Feelings, more approachable than Leaves in the wind or Gun Shadows.
The product pages include a 2 ml sample size. When it is available, that is where to begin, especially with a house whose bottles cost €220 to €350 and are made to order. How samples work is explained on our samples page.
