On the shores of Lugu Lake, between Yunnan and Sichuan, the scent of Sulima rice wine drifts from the wooden houses of the Mosuo, one of the last matrilineal societies in the world. The name

摩梭古酿 is read mó suō gǔ niàng: 摩梭 (mó suō), the Mosuo people; 古 (gǔ), ancient; 酿 (niàng), the fermented brew, the liquor left to age. In English: “The ancient brew of the Mosuo”.
