The house

50 ml, Gourmand leather
by Pernoire
Kama is the Sanskrit word for desire. The house takes it to mean the engine we let die out through routine, and the drawn bow of the bottle echoes the image. The message is direct, and so is the fragrance.
The whole of Kama rests on a wager: making a confectionery note live alongside a leather smoked with birch tar without one cancelling out the other. Few houses take the risk, because sugar usually makes leather syrupy and leather makes sugar dirty. Here both remain legible from start to finish.
Blackberry arrives juicy and full. Birch tar darkens it almost at once and sets down the scent of burnt leather that will run through the whole fragrance. Violet and iris slip in between the two and keep the contrast from turning brutal. It is the sharpest opening in the Pernoire catalog.
The cotton candy settles on the leather without melting into it. Cypriol brings an earthy, smoky facet, and dry amber draws the whole together. The heart is the subject of the fragrance: two materials facing each other, carried at the same intensity, with neither taking over.
Moss and cashmere wool close on a dry, slightly downy softness. Musk lengthens the trail. This is the base that lingers longest on fabric, well after it has left the skin.
Sugar and leather in a single gesture.
For lovers of gourmand leathers and strong contrasts. Kama is a leather before it is a sweet, and it is far less of a dessert than Poka. You need to like birch tar, which is unmistakable here.
Wear in the evening, from October to March. Its density makes it difficult at the office and in the sun. One spray on clothing keeps the moss and cashmere going for two days.
Andreas Wilhelm is a perfumer based in Zurich. He wanted to become a goldsmith, but with no apprenticeships available, a guidance counselor steered him towards an apprenticeship as a chemistry lab technician at Givaudan in Dübendorf, in 1993. He then trained as a perfumer at Luzi from 1999. He opened his own studio in 2008 and has also been the in-house perfumer at Weleda.
In 2017, he launched his label PERFUME.SUCKS, which prints the full list of ingredients on every bottle. He says he starts by writing a formula on the computer, then adjusts it through trials. With his clients, he compares himself to the car, with the client at the wheel. He received an Art and Olfaction Award in 2023.
