Perfumery in all its styles

Giving a niche perfume as a gift, without getting it wrong

Flacon de Red Fever, extrait de parfum Aaron Terence Hughes de 50 ml

Perfume is one of the hardest gifts to get right, because you are choosing, on someone else's behalf, a smell they will wear on their skin all day. In niche perfumery the risk is greater still: the compositions are more distinctive, more concentrated and more expensive. There are, however, three simple ways not to get it wrong, and all of them come down to not choosing alone.

The real risk: a bottle that stays closed

A perfume cannot be judged on a paper strip

You can love a smell on blotting paper and not be able to stand it three hours later on your skin. The top notes, the ones you smell in a shop, often do not last half an hour, and the base, which stays for hours, is a different smell. Our article on the fragrance pyramid explains that mechanism. Choosing a perfume for someone else from a piece of paper means betting on a tiny part of what they will actually wear.

Taste cannot be guessed from the outside

Tolerance for animalic notes, for sweetness, for oud or for vanilla varies enormously from person to person, and it cannot be deduced from someone's clothes or their age. A person can love a smoky leather and dislike a white floral, with nothing to signal it in advance. Add to that the fact that the same composition does not smell exactly the same on two skins, and you have the reason why so many gifted bottles end up at the back of a cupboard.

Three ways to give without guessing

Give several samples rather than a bottle

This is the safest solution, and the cheapest. Three or four 2 ml samples, chosen from different families, let the person wear each perfume for a whole day before deciding. Our 2 ml vials range from 6 EUR to 30 EUR depending on the reference, which leaves room to gather several. The our samples page explains how to order them together, and our guide to making the most of a 2 ml sample gives the testing method.

Give a discovery set

A set has the advantage of looking like a gift while still being a trial. The 3rd Order set by Cæleste brings together the house's first three perfumes in 5 ml each, at 89 EUR. Five millilitres is enough for several weeks of wear, enough to know whether you want the bottle. It is the only set of its kind currently available from us, and only a few remain.

Give the smallest size

When you are reasonably sure of your choice, take the smallest bottle offered rather than the largest. A 10 ml from Aaron Terence Hughes, from 27 to 90 EUR depending on the reference, represents several months of wear for a concentrated extrait. If the perfume lands well, the big bottle can come later, and it will be chosen by the right person.

Start from what the person already wears

If you are set on giving a bottle, the best source of information is the perfume already on their shelf. Photograph the label, then look for three things.

  • The olfactory family. Woody, amber, floral, citrus, gourmand: this is the most useful benchmark, and our guide to the eight olfactory families describes each one.
  • The base notes. They tell you what the person tolerates over time. Someone whose perfumes all end on patchouli and vanilla will have no trouble with an amber.
  • The concentration. Someone used to eaux de toilette will find a 35% extrait overwhelming unless you tell them to use a single spray. Our article on the differences between extrait, eau de parfum and eau de toilette is worth slipping into the card.

If you know nothing about their taste, our quiz helps locate a preference in a few questions. And there is one honest option, often the best: ask. Offering the choice is not a defeat.

Five perfumes from our catalog that are easy to give

Easy to give does not mean bland. These five references share three traits: they are readable from the first minute, they ask for no particular habit, and they are in stock as we write.

Decembrie 89, by Adi ale Van, is the easiest of the house's gourmands to love. Apple, orange and lemon on top, vanilla pod and hazelnut in the heart, then three vanillas and rum in the base, with a stated longevity of 10 to 12 hours. Its bottle is painted and assembled by hand, which makes it a real object to unwrap. One thing to plan for: the house produces to order, so the time before shipping is longer than for the rest of our catalog. 50 ml at 250 EUR, 2 ml at 14 EUR.

Red Fever, by Aaron Terence Hughes, is a floral fruity gourmand that is very easy to wear. Bergamot and pear on top, then lily, raspberry, plum, peach and rose absolute, over a base of almond, vanilla, amber, oakmoss and ambergris. Stated longevity of 10 hours or more, with moderate sillage at 4 out of 5. It is also the most flexible to give, since it comes in three sizes: 50 ml at 160 EUR, 10 ml at 35 EUR and 2 ml at 10 EUR.

Guardian Angel, by Cæleste, signed by Chris Maurice, is the gentlest of the house's four perfumes. A white bouquet of neroli, tuberose, jasmine, heliotrope, bergamot and hawthorn, then musks, coconut milk, cardamom, vanilla and tonka bean, and a base of frankincense, benzoin, myrrh and amber. The perfumer talks about the texture of a cloud. A 30 ml bottle at 215 EUR, designed from sacred geometry, with collage artwork: it is a gift that sits well in the hand.

Itim Kati, by Tada Parfumeur, is the choice for someone who likes gentle kitchen smells. Coconut cream, condensed milk and hazelnut on top, jasmine, cotton candy, Siam benzoin, tonka bean and palm sugar in the heart, then roasted coconut, vanilla, woods and sandalwood. It is an eau de parfum, so less concentrated than most of our extraits, which makes it easier to dose for someone who is not used to them. 50 ml at 160 EUR, 2 ml at 10 EUR.

Ambergris Rose N°P29, by ChuJian, is the most affordable of the five, at 130 EUR for 50 ml and 8 EUR for the 2 ml. Its pyramid uses few materials: rose and pink pepper, then rose and cedarwood, and a base of ambroxan, white musk, cashmere wood and amber. A readable amber rose, with no traps, that will suit a great many people.

What is better not to give blind

Let us say it plainly: several of our finest perfumes make poor gifts if you are not sure of the person's taste. That is not a question of quality, but of demands made on the wearer.

  • Ouds and animalic notes. Oud Post-Mortem, by The Unleashed Apothecary, opens on wild mushroom and damp earth before a base of Hindi oud and ash. It is a remarkable perfume, and a risky gift for anyone who has never smelled oud.
  • Deliberately unsettling openings. Oudian, by Pernoire, starts on durian, a fruit with a sulphurous smell. The effect is intended and the base is superb, but the first few minutes can put someone off.
  • Author perfumes with no familiar reference. Principalities, from the same house as Guardian Angel, was composed from astronauts' accounts of the smell of space: hot metal, gunpowder, burnt biscuit. It was a finalist at the Art and Olfaction Awards 2025, and it calls for a trial first.

All three of these exist as 2 ml samples. If one of them comes to mind for someone, that is exactly the case where the 2 ml is the right gift.

Three practical details

A few things to know before ordering.

  • We do not offer a gift card at this time. If you want to leave the choice open, samples or the set come closest.
  • Several houses produce to order, Adi ale Van in particular. For a specific date, order well ahead and check the lead time stated on the product page.
  • Niche stock is short by nature. Several of the references mentioned here exist in only a few units with us, and a page that is available today may not be next week.

Frequently asked questions

What perfume should you give when you do not know the person's taste?

No bottle at all. Give three or four 2 ml samples from different families, or the 3rd Order set. The person will choose for themselves, and that is the only way to be sure the gift gets worn.

Is a niche perfume a good gift?

Yes, if you know the person's taste, because it is a rare object they will not come across on someone else. No, if you are choosing blind, because the compositions are more distinctive than mass-market ones and the bottle costs more.

Should you give a men's or a women's perfume?

The question matters less and less. Most of the perfumes in our catalog are listed as unisex on their product page, and we recommend looking at the family and the notes rather than the gender label. A spicy amber is not addressed to a sex, it is addressed to a taste.

Do you offer a gift card?

No, not at this time. It is something customers ask for and that we have not set up yet. In the meantime, a set of samples does the same job: it leaves the final choice to the person.

Can a perfume be exchanged if it is not liked?

The return conditions are set out in our refund policy, and an opened or used perfume cannot be taken back. That is precisely why we insist so much on trying a 2 ml before buying a bottle.

To choose within the families that suit the person, our guide to niche perfumery explains what sets these houses apart, and the houses and creators page presents them one by one. To put together a trial gift, the our samples page explains how to gather several 2 ml vials in a single order.
