The dark side of Adi ale Van comes down to five extraits available in our shop: Adiere, Leaves in the wind, Gun Shadows, Labels of Feelings and Mezcal My Love. These are the house's leather perfumes and smoky scents: every one of them has a smoky note in its olfactory family, and most add leather, tobacco or oud. Each one also starts from a story, often a very personal one. For the history of the house and its founder, our presentation of Adi ale Van is still the place to begin.
Perfumes that tell a scene
Adi ale Van was a visual artist before he became a perfumer, and it shows in these five compositions. The pyramids do not just list materials. They name objects and situations: an ink accord, an old newspaper accord, a wanted poster accord, a Cuba Libre accord, and even dust. None of these accords exists as a raw material. They are blends built to evoke a smell, which our article on the accord in perfumery explains in detail.
Each perfume also carries a subtitle that sets the tone: Rebel Potion, Iron Potion, Elixir de Muscel, Elixir of Silence, Desire Potion. Two of them are signed by the artist himself, Adiere and Gun Shadows. The other three are composed by guest perfumers. All are extraits, with a concentration of 25 to 40% depending on the product page, macerated for 6 to 12 months before 2 months of maturation.
Leaves in the wind, the elixir of Muscel
Leaves in the wind carries the subtitle Elixir de Muscel. Muscel is a historic region of the Romanian Carpathians, and the name points to the family story behind the house: that of the anticommunist partisans of the Muscel mountains, which the artist's grandfather told him about during the winters. The perfume dates from 2024. It was composed by Michele Marin, with 60% natural materials according to the product page. The line that comes with it is short: "The leaves carried away, the smoke that stays."
The top pairs black pepper, tobacco, cinnamon, magnolia, lavender and fennel seeds. So the tobacco is there from the first minute, and our article on tobacco in perfumery details what this note covers. The heart brings together birch, smoky notes, frankincense and a leather accord. The base is long: oud, amber, civet, castoreum, vetiver, ambrinol, patchouli, musk, labdanum and dust.
It is a 30% extrait, macerated for 6 months. Our product page gives it an intensity of 5 out of 5, a sillage of 4 out of 5 and a longevity of 10 to 12 hours. It recommends it for the evening, in autumn and winter. The civet and castoreum make it the most animalic of the five. It is meant for people who already know smoky leathers and dense bases.
Gun Shadows, the autobiographical perfume
Gun Shadows, subtitled Iron Potion, was signed by Adi ale Van in 2026. The house describes it as autobiographical. Its product page sums it up in one image: "A western without music: iron, gunpowder and yellowed paper." The family given is metallic smoky woody.
The pyramid is the shortest of the five, and the most conceptual. At the top, metallic notes and a blood accord. In the heart, a wanted poster accord, aged liquor and a cheap cigarette accord. In the base, a coffin wood accord, oud, an old newspaper accord and an ink accord. The pyramid mentions neither flower nor fruit. The opening is cold and metallic, then the perfume turns dry and dusty.
Its concentration is 40%, the highest of the five. Together with Leaves in the wind, it is the most powerful of this group on our product pages: 5 out of 5 for intensity, and 5 out of 5 for longevity, with more than 12 hours stated. Maceration of 8 months. The product page suggests it for the evening, in autumn and winter, and warns that it is a difficult perfume. We agree: it takes some getting used to.
Adiere, the party that spills over
Adiere, subtitled Rebel Potion, is the other perfume signed by the artist, also in 2026. Its product page describes it as rum and cola spilled on a leather jacket, in a smoke filled room. The family is smoky amber woody.
The top is sparkling: Cuba Libre accord, cola accord, lime, bitter orange, black pepper and thyme. The heart moves to tobacco absolute, a whisky accord, leather, an ink accord and pine wood. The base brings together a smoke accord, patchouli, vanilla absolute, tonka bean, amber, cocoa and oud. The vanilla and tonka soften the drydown, which makes it rounder than Leaves in the wind or Gun Shadows. Our article on leather in perfumery places it among the leathers paired with tobacco.
A 27% extrait, macerated for 10 months. Intensity and sillage of 4 out of 5, longevity of 8 to 10 hours. The product page recommends it for the evening, in autumn and winter.
Labels of Feelings and Mezcal My Love, the two ways in
Labels of Feelings, a floral caught in smoke
Labels of Feelings, subtitled Elixir of Silence, was composed by Antonio Alessandria in 2026. The product page presents it as the most architectural composition in the catalogue, and sums it up this way: "The words we stick on what we cannot name." Its family is leathery smoky floral.
The top pairs passion fruit, blackcurrant bud absolute, plum and juniper tar. The tar arrives quickly and cuts through the fruit. The heart is floral: lily of the valley, magnolia, jasmine and saffron. The base is the darkest part of the composition: cedar, frankincense, labdanum, leather, smoke, an ambergris accord and musks. It is the least concentrated extrait of the group, at 25%, macerated for 11 months. Intensity and sillage of 4 out of 5, longevity of 8 to 10 hours. The product page says it works by day as well as by night, in every season.
Mezcal My Love, smoke for summer
Mezcal My Love, subtitled Desire Potion, was composed by Jimmy Bodin in 2026. Its line evokes the smoked glass, the salt on the rim and the night just beginning. The family is woody smoky aromatic. Its pyramid mentions no leather, no tobacco and no oud, the only case in this group.
The top is fresh: Italian grapefruit, Japanese peppermint and ginger. The heart carries the smoke, with a mezcal accord, agave syrup, brown sugar, smoky notes, geranium and rosemary. The base is dry and green: oakmoss, Haitian vetiver and hinoki. A 32% extrait, macerated for 12 months. Intensity and sillage of 4 out of 5, longevity of 7 to 9 hours. It is the freshest of the group on our product pages, and the only one its page recommends for spring and summer, in the daytime.
Which one to start with
If you are new to smoky perfumes, start with Labels of Feelings or Mezcal My Love. The first keeps a heart of white flowers that makes the smoke easier to wear. The second replaces leather with citrus and herbs. Choose by season: Mezcal My Love for the warm months, Labels of Feelings for the rest of the year.
If you already like tobacco and ambers, Adiere is the next step. Its vanilla base makes it more welcoming than the last two. Leaves in the wind and Gun Shadows come after that. The first will appeal to lovers of animalic leathers and birch. The second is for people looking for a narrative perfume rather than a pleasant one in the usual sense.
In every case, go through a sample first. All five come in 2 ml, from €14 to €20 depending on the perfume, whereas the 50 ml bottles range from €250 to €350. Our samples page explains how to order several 2 ml vials together. To compare these five perfumes with the gourmands and fruity scents of the house, our guide which Adi ale Van perfume to choose covers the whole catalogue.
How to wear them
These are concentrated extraits, and all five have an intensity of 4 or 5 out of 5 on our product pages. One spray is enough for a first try. For Gun Shadows and Leaves in the wind, the most intense, stick to one or two. Apply them to skin rather than clothing: at this concentration, fabric holds the scent for a long time.
For the season, follow the product pages. Adiere, Leaves in the wind and Gun Shadows are recommended for the evening, in autumn and winter. Labels of Feelings can be worn in every season. Mezcal My Love is the only one designed for spring and summer. The end of October, with its longer evenings and that last night of the month that feels a little different, suits the first three well.
Test them one at a time, over a full day. The bases of Leaves in the wind and Gun Shadows keep changing for hours, and the top tells you almost nothing about what you will smell in the evening.
What these leather perfumes and smoky scents share
Smoke is the common thread. It appears in the olfactory family of all five perfumes, in different forms: a smoke accord in Adiere, smoky notes in Leaves in the wind and Mezcal My Love, smoke in Labels of Feelings, a cigarette accord in Gun Shadows.
Leather returns in three of them. Adiere puts it in the heart with tobacco and whisky. Leaves in the wind pairs it with birch, the material that gives leather its tarry side. Labels of Feelings places it in the base, after a juniper tar in the top that plays a similar role.
Oud is present in the base of Adiere, Leaves in the wind and Gun Shadows. Tobacco is listed in Adiere and Leaves in the wind, and Gun Shadows suggests it through its cheap cigarette accord. Animalic notes, finally, are reserved for Leaves in the wind, with civet and castoreum. Ink links Adiere and Gun Shadows, the two perfumes signed by the artist.
