The house
Bortnikoff is a perfume house founded in 2018 in Thailand by Dmitry Bortnikoff, an architect by training and a perfumer by calling. In 2013, he co-founded Feel-Oud, a distillery specializing in some of the finest oud and sandalwood oils in the world. Many of the oils in his fragrances are distilled by the house itself, using 19th-century techniques. Each composition contains 95 to 100% natural ingredients. The range is divided into several collections: Main, Ouds, Elixir, Cologne and Entry Level.

Sayat Nova is a Bortnikoff Extrait de Parfum, an oriental gourmand that pairs apricot and narcissus at the top, rum and vanilla in the heart, and three ouds in the base: Laotian oud, Bengal oud and Trat oud, set on oakmoss. The brand sees it as a demonstration of its pursuit of excellence in the choice of materials. Its high concentration gives it long longevity and an evolution rich in nuances.
Sayat Nova is part of the main Bortnikoff collection, from the house founded in Thailand by Dmitry Bortnikoff, which distills many of its oud oils itself. It can be compared with Manie du Café, another gourmand in the same collection, darker and centered on coffee. Those who prefer a less sweet oud will turn to Mysterious Oud, in the Ouds collection.
Yes, it is a unisex fragrance. Its gourmand side, rum and vanilla, is balanced by the woody depth of the ouds, which makes it pleasant on any skin.
The brand highlights the high oil concentration of this Extrait. It generally lasts more than 12 hours, with a very persistent base of oud and oakmoss.
The base combines three ouds: one from Laos, one from Bengal and one from Trat, a province of Thailand. Each has its own facets, and it is their balance that gives the fragrance its character.

by Bortnikoff
Sayat Nova takes its name from an 18th-century Armenian poet and troubadour. The fragrance captures his romantic mysticism, that of faraway lands and bygone centuries, and plays on passion and opulence. It brings together two worlds that attract each other: dark, intense woods and a rich, gourmand sweetness.
The base rests on three varieties of oud, from Laos, Bengal and Trat, whose balance calls for true expertise. Dmitry Bortnikoff applies his usual rigor in selecting the materials, for an oriental gourmand of great precision. The high concentration of oils ensures excellent tenacity, and the natural ingredients reveal different nuances with each application.
Apricot opens with a juicy sweetness, tempered by narcissus, more floral and slightly wild.
The heart turns rich: rum brings its amber warmth, vanilla wraps around it. It is the sweetest and most generous stage of the fragrance.
Three ouds from Laos, Bengal and Trat in Thailand answer one another, each with its own character. Oakmoss gives them a classic, earthy foundation.
A poem read in a low voice, a glass of rum in hand, in a candlelit room.
Sayat Nova will please lovers of sweet, sumptuous fragrances as much as oud enthusiasts who enjoy exploring its subtleties. It is a fragrance for those who embrace a romantic, adventurous side. It comes into its own in fall and winter, in the evening or for a date. Two sprays are enough, preferably on the skin so the three ouds reveal themselves with the warmth of the body.
Dmitry Bortnikoff is an architect by training. He turned to distillation: in 2013, he co-founded Feel-Oud, a company that distills oud and sandalwood oils, for which he also signs several perfumes. In 2018, he founded his own house, Bortnikoff, in Thailand. Much of the oil he uses is distilled there on site, following 19th-century methods, and his compositions contain 95 to 100% natural ingredients.
He distills some materials himself, including a wild oud from Sri Lanka that he also uses as a tincture. He composes most of his perfumes alone. He co-signed a few with Rajesh Balkrishnan, then a collection with Christian Carbonnel. His son Maxim trained alongside him.
Rajesh Balkrishnan pursues two activities side by side. He is a professor of public health at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, after a bachelor's degree in pharmaceutical sciences in Mumbai and a doctorate in public health earned in 1999 at the University of North Carolina. He also composes perfumes and serves as art director for several brands, including Mallo.
With Dmitry Bortnikoff, he co-signed Sayat Nova in 2020, Santa Sangre in 2021 and then Scheherazade in 2023. He has also composed for Mallo, Folkwinds, Faizal Privée and Maksim Perfume, the brand of Maxim Bortnikoff.
