Onyx

Extrait de Parfum, animalic woody floral, new 2026 formula

by Aaron Terence Hughes

Fragrance Notes

  • Top · Rose absolute
  • Heart · Raspberry, saffron, blackcurrant
  • Base · Ambrostar™, truffle, musk, ATH oud 5%, vanilla absolute, civet absolute, patchouli

Beautifully animalistic

Changes in the regulations on certain raw materials forced Aaron Terence Hughes to revisit the original Onyx formula. Rather than simply replacing what could no longer be used, he rebuilt the fragrance, restoring its animalic character while keeping it balanced and wearable.

At the heart of the new formula, 5% oud gives Onyx its dark depth and impact. Ethically sourced civet absolute brings an animalic dimension: almost unbearable on its own, it is transformed once inside the composition. Rose absolute balances the whole, while vanilla absolute rounds it with warmth and richness.

The olfactory journey

Opening: the rose

Rose absolute opens the fragrance, full and velvety: it sets the tone and holds the balance against the power of the base.

Heart: dark fruits and saffron

Raspberry and blackcurrant bring a dark, juicy fruitiness, saffron a leathery, spicy warmth.

Base: oud and civet

The 5% oud, civet and truffle compose a dense, animalic base, made radiant and sensual by Ambrostar™ (an ambery accord), musk, vanilla and patchouli.

A clearly rose-dominant opening with pronounced persistence. The rose defines the character for a significant portion of the wear and remains present for an unusually long time. Only as it develops do vanilla, chocolate, and plum emerge more distinctly, adding warmth and a darker depth to the composition.
The base of patchouli, oud, amber, and musk provides stability and substance without overshadowing the floral signature. The structure remains coherent throughout, and the performance is, as expected from an extract, strong.
In the opening, it leans quite opulent and intensely floral to my nose; the drydown feels notably more balanced and rounded. Consistently unisex, with a clear appeal to those who appreciate bold, dark rose-driven fragrances.
